Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI), Ludhiana conducted a training programme on “Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Agriculture and Allied Sectors” on September 14-16, 2026. This three days training programme was designed for the benefit of state extension officials from different agriculture and allied departments as well as farmers. In all, 16 trainees attended this programme.
At the behest of the programme, Ms. Bharti Madan, Deputy Director (Information Technology) from PAMETI, welcomed all the trainees and highlighted the objective of the programme. She emphasized that the programme curriculum had been thoughtfully designed to help trainees understand emerging technologies without delving into complex technical jargon, while focusing on their practical applications in agriculture and allied sectors.
She delivered the introductory session and explained the Artificial Intelligence in detail. Participants were made aware about various AI technologies like Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Speech Recognition etc. through practical examples.
The concept of digital image processing and Internet of Things (IoT) was explained by Dr Rohit Sharma, department of Processing and Food Engineering, PAU. He also illustrated various practical applications of these technologies in food production and processing. Dr Tarandeep Singh, department of Farm and Power Engineering, PAU gave practical insights into use of Drones, UAVs and Wireless Sensor Networks in agriculture during the exposure visit to “Precision Agriculture Lab” at PAU.
Dr R K Setia, Director, Department of Soil and Land Survey of India, Ministry of Agriculture, GoI took a videoconferencing session from New Delhi to discuss the use of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in crop surveillance and Management, Yield Estimation, Risk Assessment etc. The use of AI in agricultural marketing using BLOCKCHAIN technologies was also discussed in the programme.
Programme provided a platform for scientists, extension workers and farmers to interact, understand, and discuss AI applications, their scope and future challenges. Participants expressed in their feedback that the training was very practical and relevant in today’s time. Programme ended with distribution of certificates to the trainees.
